Melbourne University Dancesport Club

MUDC Newsletter October 2008

29 September 2008 Brought to you by Melbourne University Dancesport Club

September Recap

What a better way to usher in spring! We had the Medals, Swing Social and Dinner Dance, all in one month. Medal Night (or Afternoon) was held in the new location of Lazer Room. Despite the change in settings, it was a day of very high quality medals. So, congrats to those who did their medals! And thanks to those who partnered the medallists (getting in front of the judges once is hard enough).

The Swing Social brought good news and bad news. The good news was that the dreary, rainy day was transformed into a Hawaiian paradise filled with swingers! Everyone got to wear leis while doing the Charleston, as we celebrated the much-awaited spring break. The bad news is the Swing Social was our last social ... in uni that is. There is another social coming up, so keep reading!

And then, there was Dinner Dance 2008. With masks galore, it was hard recognising half the people there. But the lots and lots of dancing (and maybe drinks) got everyone knowing each other again. The performances were great! Thanks to Flare Dance and our very own Swing performance group

MUDC Dancers in the Spotlight: Vera Kung

- What competitions have you entered recently?

Last month (September) we competed at the Premier Dancesport Championships. It was our first Level 2 Latin comp, so I'd been really looking forward to it.

     - Results?

I started with a new partner this year, and we've had a really productive year, especially in Latin. We came 3rd in Level 1 Latin at the Crown International in March, then won Level 1 Latin in the next two Victorian championships. Then in June, we won the National Championships in Canberra! We made it to the top 10 semi-finals in our first Level 2 Latin event last month.

I started competing in Standard (Ballroom) this year as well. We came 5th in Level 1 Standard at Premier last month, and 4th at the Southern Cross Championships in July.

      - What got you dancing and competing?

I started dancing in 2003 when one of my friends dragged me along to try this thing called "Street Latin" with MUDC. Within a couple of weeks I was hooked, and the next semester, I did about six MUDC classes a week -- tried every style! The same friend started doing competitions a couple of years later, and convinced me to do the same. I did my first competition at the Australian Championships in December 2006.

       - Other interesting facts

My current dance partner was also an MUDC member while he was at uni. In fact, there's a pretty big crowd of us MUDC people at comps! It's great, because we always cheer each other on at comps. If anyone is interested in doing dancesport competitions, or just knowing more about it, they should ask any of the teachers or any of us members who compete. It's good fun -- if you're willing to put in the time for the training, it's definitely a worthwhile experience!

: : Vera is under the MUDC sponsorship program. If you are interested in competing or are already competing, feel free to approach any committee member about getting sponsored : :
