MUDC Newsletter September 2008

August 31, 2008 Brought to you by Melbourne University Dancesport Club

August Recap

Firstly, let's welcome our new members who just came in this semester. It is always exciting to see new interest and talent in dancing!

And congratulations to all who participated in the 2008 Intervarsity Dancesport Competition! We salute you guys for your bravery and of course, your talent. Medal or no medal, you are all winners in MUDC. Of course, it wouldn't have been as much fun without those who came to support the competitors. So, thanks for turning up and cheering our dancers on!

The Ballroom Social was a big success and, more importantly, full of fun. Now we are ready to hit the social dance scene and of course, the Dinner Dance!

Medal Night

13 September 2008 - Grand Buffet Hall, Union House

Although it is only weeks away, "not enough practice" is no reason for not doing medals this semester, just because you are all good dancers! Besides, it is always nice to gain feedback on your technique (and have a medal to display and show off).

So sign up for the medals! The sign up sheet will be circulating in dance classes pretty soon.

Secret September Social

19 September 2008 - Grand Buffet Hall, Union House - 6.30pm - $7 for all - 2 hours beginners class and social dancing - snacks provided

Unfortunately, the September Social is being all mysterious and cloak-and-dagger. But we will drop hints about the theme and style in classes, so stay sharp!

Fun Facts

In the spirit of the upcoming Dinner Dance, here are some Masquerade Ball trivia:

  • Masquerade balls were originally celebrations of marriages and other dynastic events, and were especially popular in Venice.
  • Edgar Allan Poe's "The Masque of the Red Death" short story was inspired by masquerade balls.
  • Gustav III of Sweden was assassinated at a masquerade ball by a disgruntled nobleman.
