Intervarsity Competition!

Intervarsity Competition Poster

Dear MUDC members,

The traditional dance rivalry between Melbourne and Monash is coming to town! Intervarsity is being held on Friday September 10 in the Grand Buffet Hall, from 6.30pm to 9.30pm. It’s $10 to compete in as many categories as you like, and $5 to come along to watch. There will also be some social dancing for all comers.

Everyone who is a member of the club has enough skills to enter in one of the levels of competition. The night is judged, but it’s not scary or intimidating at all! Individual medals are up for grabs in all divisions - Latin, Street Latin, Swing, Ballroom, New Vogue and Cuban Salsa. Even more incentive, if having tons of fun wasn’t enough – shiny medals to show off!

A new addition this year is a Showcase event, where teams, as well as partnerships, can go nuts with their creativity and show off their skills. Costumes and props are encouraged. Only half of the people in a Showcase group need to be members of the Dancesport clubs, so if you have a group of friends that want to get a routine going, but not all are members, fret not! For example, if you’re in the Silver Street Latin class, why not get as many of them together as possible and choreograph your own Salsa showdown?

See a friendly committee member during your dance class to sign up. The cut-off date for entering is Friday September 3rd (Week 6).

I’ll see you on the dancefloor -  we can’t let Monash beat us on our home turf!

Tap Dancing starts Monday!

Hello Dancers,

MUDC would like to introduce the “Dance of the Semester” – Tap dancing!
Starting this Monday in week 2, 1-2pm in the Arts Centre, Room 404.

“Tap is a style of dance distinguished by percussive footwork that marks
out precise rhythmic patterns on the floor. Tap Dancing was developed in
the United States, but owes much of its development to sources such as
Irish solo step dance, the English clog dance, Spanish Flamenco and
African dance movements.”

While tap shoes are recommended they are not necessary for beginners, as a
regular pair of hard soled shoes with a relatively low heel will suffice.

The Beginner Tap class will be free for everyone in Week 2, so bring your
friends and come give it go!

Hope to see you there!

*NEW* dance classes for 2010

Hello Happy Dancers!

Melbourne University Dancesport Club is pleased to introduce two BRAND NEW
dance classes to our timetable this semester!

**Dance of the Semester: Go-Go dancing class** 1-2pm Mondays, Black Hole Room

“Go-Go dancing was popular during the 1960’s and 70’s and in this class
you’ll learn classic retro dance moves including the Twist, the Hustle,
the Monkey, Funky Disco, Saturday Night Fever and the Bus Stop. Go-Go is
fun and energetic and these classes will provide you with heaps of new
moves to impress your friends on the dance floor! The Go-Go class is free
for the first week of semester, so bring your friends and come give it a
go-go!”

**Social Class** 12-1pm Fridays, Des Connor Room

“This class combines Latin, Street Latin, Ballroom and New Vogue into one
class and focuses on teaching moves you can use on the social dance floor.
No previous dance experience is necessary. Dances may include Waltz, Cha
Cha Cha, Salsa, Jive, Merrilyn, Quickstep and others. The Social Class is
free for the first week of semester, so bring your friends and come try it
out!”

Check out the class timetable for class locations and times.

Much love, from your
MUDC Committee

Free dance classes this week

Hello Dancers,

once again we start the semester with our free dance classes! For this week (July 26th–30th) all MUDC dance classes are free, with beginners and bronze being free a week longer.

Our new dance of the semester will be Tap dancing, taught by a professional teacher. This will start in week 2, and is planned for Monday afternoons at 1pm, but this is to be confirmed.

Class times will be the same throughout the semester.

Take the most of this opportunity to learn about our different styles and find out what suits you this semester. You can bring friends along also, who do not need to be members to enjoy our classes.

Make sure to check out our timetable page!

Cheers,

Rick, MUDC Website Maintainer

Social class venue change – Friday 12pm

Dear dancers,

During Week 1 of semester, the Social Class will be held in the basketball stadium in the Sports Centre, rather than the Des Conner Room. This venue is bigger so that everyone can bring a friend and come along to try the Social Class! Taught by Barrie, this gives a ‘tasting plate’ of most of the dance styles MUDC offers – Latin, Street Latin, Ballroom and New Vogue. To get to the basketball stadium, enter the Sports Centre and take the stairs up to the first level. It is the stadium on the left – West Stadium.

The Social Class will be held in Des Conner from Week 2 onwards.

See you there!
